Mindfulness in the New Year
Another year, another great opportunity to start your mindfulness journey. If you already started, great! You must know just how valuable mindfulness can be in reducing stress and improving your overall well-being. January is always a wonderful time for self-reflection. While some may be quick to list traditional resolutions, we would like to invite you to take the opportunity this year to explore what aspects of your life that you may want to address, improve, or just let be as it is. Over the last two years (because, let’s face it – we can lump 2020 and 2021 in as one big kerfuffle), we have heard from people all around the Miami area who are looking to find out how to incorporate mindfulness practices into their lives, offices, classrooms and homes. We heard from many that they felt a kind of longing to find and be a part of a community. After confronting feelings of isolation for an extended period of time, many of us are looking to learn new ways to accept moments – as difficult as some may be – as they are, moments in time that will pass. That is where mindfulness comes in. At Mindful Kids Miami, we would like to invite you to join our community this year. Each month, we offer Monthly Community Workshops which are free to attend (we do accept any donations you are willing to give to help support our teachers). This month, our workshop, “Mindfulness in the New Year” will be held on Saturday, January 16th at 10am.
A New Year Mindfulness Invitation
Whether we are sad to see the last year go or eager to wash its effects off our body, mind, and soul – taking a few moments to mindfully transition to the year is a great way to honor what we experienced and what lays ahead for us. We invite you to try this simple practice:
Find a place to sit in a comfortable position and posture. Notice your body and the physical movements it makes as you breathe, including the rise and fall of your belly, the air moving in and out of your nose or mouth.
Check-in with yourself. What is your effort & intention today and with this practice? One way to accomplish this is as you breathe in, developing a sense of awareness of self. As you breathe out, find a way to describe – it can be in as little as one word – your intentions for yourself today and this moment.
As you continue with this practice, you may notice that you may lose touch with your intentions – that’s normal and part of the practice. Bring your focus back to your breathing and your intentions.
As you are ready to bring the practice to a close, pause with your intention for a moment. When you are ready, open your eyes, and welcome a new year.
