Mindfulness classes vs. meditation apps. Which is right for you?
In today’s digitally reliant world, we have become more accustomed to finding quick, online solutions at our fingertips. From shopping and banking to even health and wellness. Much like everything else these days, mindfulness is now easily accessible through popular apps. As such, we often hear people ask why they should invest their time in a group mindfulness program – such as Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (or MBSR) – when they can take a few minutes out of their day using their mindfulness app of choice. Well, why can’t you do both?
Mindfulness is not one-size fits all and it is also not a one-and-done concept. It’s a lifestyle, a science. When practiced daily – it is beneficial, no matter which way you slice it. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction courses have been scientifically proven to alleviate stress and improve overall well-being. In fact, it is the most-researched program on mindfulness today, with over 40 years of study conducted and evidence gathered from program participants. In-person group settings tend to be incredibly valuable for most people (outside of those who suffer from high-anxiety social disorders). Being able to connect and share the experience with others is incredibly important as it builds a sense of community and provides a supportive environment. As humans, we are social animals – and partaking in a group mindfulness program allows the opportunity to grow and be challenged together as a cohort.
Additionally, a benefit of a program such as MBSR is that there is a trained facilitator available who can guide you in your journey. Trained facilitators are both trauma-sensitive and trauma-informed and are more equipped to work with you and guide you through any challenges. This is not to say that apps are not a great way to practice mindfulness. In fact, using the right app for you is a really great supplement. Taken in convenient, smaller doses, apps could be a good way to get a meditation habit started and build interest in deepening a regular mindfulness practice.
With that in mind, it’s important to do your research on which ones are created by legitimate mindfulness organizations that use valid educational material when it comes to apps. Be sure to select an app that is created or offered by a reputable program with instructors that have gone through extensive training – either through UCSD, Brown University, or the University of Massachusetts. In a world of seemingly endless options, finding the “right way” to practice mindfulness can seem daunting. The good news is that the right way is whatever works for YOU, whether it be taking an MBSR class or using a meditation app.
